US-VISIT aims to enhance security for American citizens and visitors while facilitating legitimate travel and trade. Foreign visitors will have their two index fingers scanned and a digital photograph taken to verify their identity at major ports of entry. These procedures take about 15 seconds and are carried out while Customs and Border Protection Officers review travel documents and ask questions about the visitor's stay in the U.S. ... [Read More]

Remarks at the World Economic Forum

I’m not a diplomat, I didn’t come out of a think tank. I’m a soldier, as all of you know, and I was a soldier for 35 years, and I’m conditioned by my training. My training over those 35 years and having been in battle and having been responsible for sending men and women into battle, and having been a platoon leader and having been Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a 35-year career, I’ve had many instances in my life where there have been setbacks. Setbacks and battles. And what you do is you learn from the setback and then you get back into the conflict the next day. ... [Read More]

Duty-free alcoholic beverages can be obtained from the wine mess at Embassy London, as well as at military facilities. The closest U.S. military commissary, also carrying a range of American food and consumer goods, is at Menwith Hill, near Harrogate, England, about a 3½-hour drive.  ClothingLast Updated:  10/31/2002 6:00 PM In general, clothing styles acceptable or appropriate in the U.S. are similarly so in Edinburgh. All types of clothing are sold locally, but clothes available in Scotland can be less stylish and more expensive than in the U.S. Extra tall, small, or large sizes can be difficult to find. There are also difficulties in purchasing shoes for small, large, slim or wide feet. Summerweight clothing is rarely needed in Edinburgh, but a few items may be useful for those occ ... [Read More]

Consulate General - Jeddah Post CityLast Updated:  9/28/2004 9:26 AM The American Mission to Saudi Arabia began as a legation in Jeddah in 1942. Full diplomatic relations commenced in 1949 and the U.S. Mission, located in a traditional house in the old city center, became an Embassy. The Embassy moved in 1952 to the current Consulate General location, which at the time was an isolated, beachfront property far to the north of the city limits. Along with all other foreign missions, it was transferred to Riyadh in 1984. The former Embassy compound in Jeddah is now a Consulate General in the heart of one of the Middle East’s most dynamic cities. [Read More]

Most entertainment in Zambia takes place in the home. Consider bringing a multi-zone DVD player; a multi-system videocassette player and TV (NTSC/PAL); a stereo; equipment for sports, camping and hobbies; binoculars for game parks; games; and picnic equipment such as Thermos jugs and camp iceboxes. Life jackets for children are impossible to find in Zambia. Many people bring a small barbecue for entertaining. Local BBQs can be made and purchased, as well. Charcoal briquettes are readily available at the Commissary and in the local market. Propane is available locally, though as the fittings for the tanks are not interchangeable, employees are discouraged from bringing a gas-fired BBQ obtained in the U.S.  Bring china and glassware, and personal decorating items, such as pictures and vases, Christmas decorations, books, a good short wave or satellite radio, and favorite lamps and small rugs. Attractive items can be bought in local arts and crafts markets.  In addition, special ... [Read More]

Port of Spain has several boating clubs and marinas: the Trinidad and Tobago Yacht Club, Trinidad and Tobago Yachting Association (a.k.a. TTSA, Trinidad and Tobago Sailing Assoc.), Island Properties, Power Boats, Crews Inn and Peake's, among others.  The Yacht Club has boating facilities for members and guests.  Power Boats and Island Properties, as well as Peake's, have haul-out and full service facilities for boats.  The recently established Crews Inn is a world-class marina for power and sail boats and includes a supermarket, hotel, bank, bookstore, and other features such as boat slips with full electrical, cable TV and telephone hookups.  TTSA, which is only for sailboats and dinghies, offers competitive sailing in a number of large and small boat categories.  It also sponsors children's boating classes (summer sessions book-up quickly in early April).  Sailboats and powerboats can be purchased locally, but prices are high and selection limited.  ... All U.S. installations are located in Nicosia. The Post and Its AdministrationLast Updated:  1/6/2004 9:52 AM The first U.S. official representative sent to Cyprus was Marino De Mattei, appointed as consular agent on October 27, 1832. The post was abolished and closed twice, from 1876 to 1919 and again from 1930 to 1948. A variety of groceries, including fresh fruits and vegetables, packaged foods (both domestic and imported), dairy products, and meats is available. Supermarkets stock fresh and frozen meat and fish, dairy products, fresh produce, and canned and packaged goods. Major U.S. food packagers produce such goods in Mexico as cereals, bakery products, and beverages -- but sometimes with a slightly different taste than what you may be accustomed to. Widely available fresh fruits include pineapple, papaya, watermelon, avocado and cantaloupe year round. Several large markets have both typical and unusual Mexican and tropical fruits and vegetables. Many specialty shops sell ethnic foods -- including Middle-Eastern -- locally produced fresh kosher meats, and imported frozen foods. Most food items are available at reasonable prices, but imported items are only available at prices higher than in the United States. Most of the larger supermarkets feature sections devoted to imported goods. Smaller shop ... [Read More]
