Each residence has three 1,500-watt step-down transformers, but U.S. electrical appliances must be converted to 50hz. Employees who expect to need more transformers than those provided by the Embassy are advised to bring additional transformers with them. Power outlets are three-prong Australian design; plug adapters can be purchased locally. ...

Electricity is 240v, 50hz. Power can be erratic; surges and spikes are common. Employees are advised to bring voltage protectors and surge suppressers. Personnel who own computers should bring an uninterruptible power supply or purchase one in Port Moresby. Every house has back-up generators, American automatic clothes washer and dryer, microwave oven, dishwasher, an extra freezer/refrigerator, vacuum cleaner, and a shared barbeque grill, as well as a television, multi-system video recorder and DVD player. 1. Background: The fulcrum of political power in Indonesia is sustained by Sukarno through the adroit balancing of power organizations and personal loyalties. The principal identifiable power entities in point are the Indonesian Army and the Partai Kommunis Indonesia (PKI). The status of the PKI has been examined most recently by the Office of Current Intelligence (OCI) in its Special Report of 23 October 1964, entitled "Sukarno and the Communists,"/2/ the high points of which are pertinent to consideration of the future course and emphasis of covert action in Indonesia: ... The author provides an intriguing history of the rise of U.S. power in the world. He argues that "the rise of American "unipolarity" -- has unsettled world politics. Governments everywhere are worried about the uncertainties and insecurities that appear to flow from such extreme and unprecedented disparities of power. The shifting global security environment-triggered by the terrorist attacks of September 11th-also has conspired to upset old relationships and expectations. The American invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq have put American power on display and raised far-reaching questions about the use of force, alliances, weapons of mass destruction, sovereignty and interventionism." ... The underlying mood will be one of concern and deepening frustration that little progress has been made on key issues of interest to the smaller powers. Awareness that the poor and technologically backward societies are being left behind in the new era of technological achievement may lead to pressures in the Assembly for international arrangements that will protect their interests and give them a fair share of the potential benefits of outer space, seabeds and nuclear energy. Another main preoccupation will be whether the major developed powers are ready to make increased financial commitments to accelerate development during the second development decade. A third concern will be with working out an equitable balance of obligations between the nuclear and non-nuclear powers respecting disarmament and the peaceful uses of atomic energy as related to the Non-Proliferation Treaty. There will be renewed efforts to move the West toward concrete support of African causes and hope for signif ... [Read More]

Electrical outlets take a three pronged plug with two angled prongs. The third prong is for grounding, a sensible safety precaution with 240v current. Adapters to convert U.S. and some European-type plugs are available at local hardware stores. Single phase appliances are recommended. ...

Electrical Appliances. Because of the high voltage (240 volts, 50 cycles), extreme caution must be taken in handling electrical appliances. Australian plugs are of a triangular configuration; adapter plugs are difficult to obtain here and expensive. FoodLast Updated:  11/19/2003 1:44 PM  ... [Read More]

In mid-October Lee Kuan Yew will make his first visit to the United States as Prime Minister of independent Singapore./3/ His primary purpose will be to make personal contact with the leaders of a great power he now regards as vital to Singapore's future economic stability and security. While he is anxious to maintain Singapore's non-aligned foreign policy and can portray this visit as balanced by his own 1966 trip to Eastern Europe and that of his deputy to Moscow in 1965, he will nevertheless hope that his visit will eventually pay off in concrete benefits for Singapore. ... Snow tires are recommended for winter driving and radials provide better traction in cities. Austrian and German authorities often require that vehicles entering their territory in winter have tire chains. ... [Read More]

Beijing electric current is 220v, 50 cycles. Wall sockets are typically designed for three-sprocket plugs, with the top two sprockets angled out at 45 degrees, but the plugs in different apartments, and even in the same apartment, may vary widely. American-style plugs can usually be twisted to fit the top two receptacles but provide no ground. The Embassy provides some transformers that permit use of 110v equipment and appliances. Most modern appliances (including TVs, cassette recorders, boom boxes, compact disc players, answering machines, FAX machines, etc.) with 60-cycle name plates will run on 110v, 50-cycle power without a problem. Similarly, computers and monitors will also run on 50-cycle power through a transformer without any difficulties. ... [Read More]

Even if a last-minute compromise solution can be arranged, the United Nations and particularly its peacekeeping functions will have been significantly affected by the prolonged struggle over the payments question. Even if the USSR made a contribution, it still in a sense will have won its point that the Security Council must be given more authority over peacekeeping operations. Henceforth it will be considerably more difficult for the General Assembly to institute and levy funds for such operations under powers deprived from the 1951 "Uniting for Peace" resolution unless the great powers concur. It will probably be impossible to force a permanent member of the Security Council to pay for an operation it finds politically objectionable. ... [Read More]
