Quarantine restrictions for animals are very strict. The usual quarantine period of 6 months applies to pets imported to New Zealand from all countries where rabies has not been eliminated. For animals imported from certain countries, including the continental U.S., a special 1-month quarantine may be applied for, but it is not always granted. The 1-month expedited quarantine requires careful documentation and veterinary monitoring of the animal for a 6-month period before the date of importation. The animal will require several expensive tests-including rabies titer tests-and implantation of a microchip or tattoo to qualify for expedited monitoring. Air-conditioning is strongly recommended because of high tropical temperatures and humidity. Unleaded gasoline is increasingly available in Port of Spain, but is not yet in widespread use. If you plan to ship your car back to the U.S. after your tour, you may wish to consider removing the catalytic converter prior to departure from the U.S. However, recent arrivals have retained the catalytic converter and have had little problem in finding sufficient unleaded gasoline. The government has stated that it intends to increase the use of unleaded gasoline in the coming years. Cars may also be modified locally at a lower cost. The cost and quality of local auto repair work vary widely.
