Despite intensified efforts by the Dutch Government to combat production of and trafficking in narcotic drugs, the Netherlands continues to be a significant transit point for drugs entering Europe (especially cocaine), an important producer and exporter of synthetic drugs, notably MDMA (Ecstasy), and an important consumer of most illicit drugs. U.S. law enforcement information indicates the Netherlands still is by far the most significant source country for Ecstasy in the U.S. The Dutch prosecutor’s office reported in 2004, however, that the number of Ecstasy tablets seized in the U.S. linked to the Netherlands dropped to 1 million in 2003 from 2.5 million in 2002.
