Press Briefing

I'm not troubled by this. I think the American people will put this in context and perspective, and understand perfectly why the President felt it was necessary to undertake this military operation with a willing coalition, in order to remove this tyrant from office, to make sure there are no more questions about weapons of mass destruction, because the regime that was determined to have them is gone. And we now have to focus on the future, and that is to build a better Iraq for the Iraqi people, and help them put in place a representative form of government that will make sure that there are never any more weapons of mass destruction in this country, and that it's a country that will live in peace with its neighbors. And we can chew on the sentence and the State of the Union address forever, but I don't think it undercuts the President's credibility. ... [Read More]

Remarks to The Africa Policy Advisory Panel Conference

I have read the report that has been produced with great interest, and I am so pleased to see that many of the insights contained in the report reflect priorities that President Bush and his Administration are actively pursuing. It is good to know that we are all working on the same issues with the same perspective and that we're moving in the same direction. ... [Read More]

On the Record Briefing: The Assistant Secretary Discusses Tenure at Department of State

So, it's not only problematic for the Zimbabweans, but it is truly problematic for the region.  Because if you have a country sitting in the middle of a region with these dramatic and drastic problems, the spillover effect is there.  There is no two ways about it.Yes.QUESTION:  (Inaudible.)  I mean, you have this unique position, unlike the Europeans, who've got this colonial baggage.  You could have really put the pressure on, if you'd wanted to.ASSISTANT SECRETARY KANSTEINER:  I think that our approach ... Remarks toThe American Enterprise Institute

But they need to be fully country teams. One of the things that I've been very much in favor over the last few years is DIA and DOD, per se, have stepped up their presence in Africa. That military insight, that security insight, is an invaluable tool, just like the AID insight, to a country team. And if we're going to approach Africa in any real fashion that gets us where we want to go, both where Africa wants to go and where we would like to see Africa, these country teams need to be more fulsome than they are in many places. There needs to be the security perspective. There needs to be a development perspective. And yeah, there needs to be the political perspective. ... [Read More]
