Wisconsin Rapids is a city located in Wood County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,435. It is the county seat of Wood County6.

Together with surrounding communities, the Wisconsin Rapids micropolitan area was, according to the 2000 census, home to 48,123 people. The city forms one of the core areas (the other is at Marshfield) of the United States Census Bureau's Marshfield-Wisconsin Rapids Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Wood County (2000 population: 75,555).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.5 km² (14.1 mi²). 34.3 km² (13.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.02% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 18,435 people, 7,970 households, and 4,782 families residing in the city. The population density is 536.8/km² (1,390.0/mi²). There are 8,426 housing units at an average density of 245.3/km² (635.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.04% White, 0.34% African American, 0.80% Native American, 3.46% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,970 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% are non-families. 34.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,956, and the median income for a family is $43,594. Males have a median income of $36,098 versus $22,466 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,723. 9.1% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line.
