Huainan, China Huainan (淮南市) is a city in Anhui province of the People's Republic of China and the seat of Huainan prefecture. It has about 251,356 inhabitants (2002) and an area of 207 km².
HistoryHuainan was founded in 283 BC by peasants. In the 1112 census 15,923 resident were counted. After a storm in 1630, which destroyed the city almost completely, it was rebuilt. The city became a religious and cultural centre, including palaces later on.
