Visoko, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Visoko is a small but famous and noteworthy city in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located on the Bosna river, on the road between Zenica and Sarajevo. Visoko is administratively part of the Zenica-Doboj Canton of the Federation.

In the census of 1991, the municipality of Visoko had 46,130 residents, of which there were 74.54% Bosniaks, 15.99% Serbs, 4.28% Croats, 3.16% Yugoslavs and 2.04% others. The town itself had 15,310 inhabitants.

It is famous for its leather industry and the city is home to the KTK Leather Company, which is the largest in the country.

History

In the Middle Ages, Visoko was the social, economic and political capital of Bosnia, earning it the title of a royal town. The city is first mentioned in 1355 in a chart made for Dubrovnik merchants by ban Kulin.

Visoko was a center of the Bosnian Church with the bishop placed in Biskupici area 4 km away from Visoko. The name Visoko is a new name for the town, old name was Visoki, and it means "high place" because the king's town was on top of the nearby montain Visočica. Urban city is located below, and named Podvisoki ("under the high").

All trade from Visoko to Dubrovnik was starting in Podvisoki: salt from Soli (now Tuzla), iron from Vareš and leather from Visoko.
